Father dies after trying to save son from rip current off Outer Banks

COROLLA, Currituck County - A 35-year-old father vacationing with his family in the Outer Banks has died after attempting to save his son from rip currents at Corolla Beach, authorities say.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Saturday. The father had jumped into the water in an effort to save his son, who was in distress. The son was able to make it back to shore safely, but the father went into cardiac arrest Currituck Fire and EMS Chief Chip Melton told the Outer Banks Voice.

The father was pulled from the surf by good Samaritans and was initially revived by first responders.

He was airlifted Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died Sunday evening. The son suffered no injuries as a result of the incident.
