RALEIGH -

Democrats in Raleigh introduced a bill to forbid Duke Energy from passing costs of cleaning up the coal ash spill down to its customers.

The bill would ban Duke from dumping coal ash in unprotected, unlined waste pits, and would set hard deadlines to close all the waste dumps Duke runs across the state.

This is meant as another proposal to the Republican-backed bill introduced by Governor Pat McCrory in his budget presentation.

Two two initiatives came after a major coal ash spill on February 2 at a Duke plant in Eden spilled and coated the Dan River with toxic sludge.
