Sheriff: Man uses Facebook, text messages to solicit teen girls
An Onslow County man faces several charges for allegedly soliciting young girls online.
Trevor Edward Inman, 21, of Newberry Street in Jacksonville, was arrested on Monday. According to warrants, he interacted online with five girls, ranging from 12 to 14 years old. The conversations via Facebook and text messages were sexual in nature, investigators said. The alleged crime happened between March 1 and May 19.
According to Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown, Inman knew one of the girls, who was possibly his girlfriend. The communications then branched out to several of the girl's friends, Sheriff Brown said.
Sheriff Brown added there's no evidence to indicate that any sex acts actually took place.
Inman has been charged with five counts of solicit child by computer and one count of solicit by computer. He was released from jail on an $80,000 bond.
Parent Renee Johnson has two teens and has kept a close eye on what they access online.
"Just scares you, when you don't know who your kids are talking to, or who they're having contact with, or where they're going, or who they're going with," Johnson said. "It's definitely scary."
Kathleen Holbrook, director of the Onslow County Child Advocacy Center, says one in seven children are sexually solicited online.
"Unfortunately with sexual predators, they open accounts, they are trolling on social media websites, they're looking for young children, and it's just a very dangerous area," Holbrook said.
She recommends keeping the computer in a common room where the whole family gathers, like in the living room.
