GREENE COUNTY - A Greene County father has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after his 1-year-old daughter was shot and killed by his rifle, said investigators.
According to Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith, 28-year-old Allen Ray Ormond Jr. (pictured above) told deputies he was holding the high-powered rifle on his lap when it went off. Ormond's 1-year-old daughter was then shot and killed, said Smith, who added that the incident appeared to be accidental.
The shooting happened at about 9:26 p.m. Wednesday at a relative's home on Letchworth Drive, less than 7 miles northwest of Snow Hill, said Sheriff Smith.
"We heard gunshots but, we thought it was somebody hunting or something," said Juan Saldana, who lives down the road.
Sheriff Smith told NewsChannel 12 he did not know if the 1-year-old's mother was present during the shooting.
The rifle was a stolen weapon that Ormond had bought on Wednesday, said Sheriff Smith.
"It's really terrible that a kid had lost its life. He's a felon, you know what I'm saying. With a gun. He shouldn't have had a gun," said Terrance Bryant, who lives nearby.
The District Attorney's Office has advised the Greene County Sheriff's Office to charge Ormond with involuntary manslaughter. In addition, since Ormond is a convicted felon and is not allowed to carry weapons, he has been charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of stolen property, according to his arrest report. Ormond is being held on a $115,000 bond.
A friend of Ormond's was also arrested, Sheriff Smith said. Kevin Dwayne Elkins, 28, of Kinston, has been charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being jailed under a $50,000 bond.
