GREENE COUNTY - This morning friends and family gathered to honor the memory of Senator Jean Preston.
The funeral service was held at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Home in Snow Hill.
The Greene County native died on Thursday at Saint Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut from complications after a fall.
Friends who attended the funeral said it was a service highlighting all the great things Senator Preston did for the community and its people.
"It was a very wonderful service full of dignity for a woman who has done a lot for her community and a lot for her family," said a friend of Senator Preston Janet Joyner. "A very well loved woman."
Senator Preston served 20 years in North Carolina's General Assembly.
Her term ended just two weeks ago.
Before getting into politics Senator Preston was a special education teacher, school administrator and principal.
She most recently served as co-chairman of the Senate Education Committee.
"If anybody is going to a better place Jean Preston is there today," said Gene Lupton a friend of Senator Preston.
Lupton became friends with Senator Preston during her campaign and said she was a people person who served her constituents well.
"Somebody like jean you can't say anything but good things about her. She was a beautiful person, a god-fearing person and that means a lot," said Lupton
Flags across the state flew at half-staff in Senator Preston's memory today.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 19th at the Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church at 11am. The church is located at 100 Yaupon Drive, Cape Carteret, NC.
