Search warrant released in NC fair ride probe
A newly released search warrant from the criminal probe into a thrill ride accident at the North Carolina State Fair shows investigators knew quickly that the machine had been tampered with prior to the incident in which three people were seriously injured.
The search warrant made public for the first time on Thursday was served Oct. 25, the day after the malfunction. To demonstrate probable cause for the search, a Wake County sheriff's detective wrote that interviews with fair workers indicated that ride owner Joshua Gene Macaroni and his employee, Timothy Dwayne Tutterrow, had bypassed key safety mechanisms on the Vortex ride days before the mishap.
Macaroni and Tutterow, both of Quitman, Ga., were later arrested on three counts each of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury.
