Round-the-clock ferry service begins for voluntary evacuation of Ocracoke Island

OCRACOKE ISLAND - Hyde County has announced a voluntary evacuation for Ocracoke Island in anticipation of Tropical Storm Arthur.

The N.C. Department of Transportation's Ferry Division began round-the-clock service from Ocracoke Island to Hatteras Island at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The service will continue until weather conditions make it unsafe to operate, the DOT said.

In addition, ferry tolls on the Ocracoke-Cedar Island and Ocracoke-Swan Quarter runs will be waived until the evacuation order is lifted.

Currently, all North Carolina Ferry Routes are running their published schedules, said the DOT. However, The Ferry Division expects brief service interruptionsĀ  starting Thursday afternoon on the southern routes and lasting into the afternoon Friday on the most northern routes, due to Tropical Storm Arthur.
