NEW BERN - A man was arrested for a robbery at a New Bern convenience store, one of three businesses targeted in the city in one night.
Matthew Thomas Small, 21, of Corinth Drive in New Bern, was accused of robbing the Five Points Mini Mart, Oaks Road and Glenburnie Road in New Bern on Jan. 7. He was arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and driving with a revoked license.
Small had his first appearance in Craven County District Court and was being held in the Craven County Jail under a $175,000.00 secured bond.
Armed men targeted three different stores in New Bern Monday night, and two of the hits could be related, police said.
Police said the first incident happened at about 6:46 p.m. Monday, at the Family Dollar store, on Neuse Boulevard near Fort Totten Park in New Bern. According to an assistant manager, two armed men entered the store. But the clerk working the register did not give up cash, and the armed men walked away empty-handed. No one was hurt, said Lt. Linda Godette of the New Bern Police Department.
Then, about 30 minutes later, an armed robbery happened at the Broad Mart at the corner of Broad and Fleet Streets, police said. According to investigators, that incident happened in the same way as the one at the Family Dollar - two masked men in dark clothing entering the store. According to the owner of Broad Mart, the robbers stole $300.
The Five Points Mini Mart, at Oaks Road and Glenburnie Road in New Bern, was also robbed on Monday, at about 9 p.m., police said. According to a witness, two masked men with guns burst through the front door, demanding money. They got away with $62, the witness said. This third robbery, however, was not believed to be linked to the first two, according to police.
Officers were outside our NewsChannel 12 studios, on Glenburnie Drive, conducting searches. According to an investigator, police believed two suspects fled into the woods behind our station. The investigator told us a jacket, believed to have belonged to one of the suspects, was found in the area. Police said they broke down the search perimeter early Tuesday morning, and did not say when they would resume.
