WARSAW, DUPLIN COUNTY - A former Duplin County teacher, charged for allegedly having sex with a student, has a husband who is a registered sex offender.
According to records, 38-year-old John S. Efird, of Willard, was convicted on an indecent liberty with a minor charge in November 2002. The incident happened in Dare County, records show.
His wife, 31-year-old Emily Efird, is accused of having sex with a student while she taught at James Kenan High School in Warsaw. School district officials said they learned on April 8 about the allegations. Efird was suspended and she resigned a week later, school officials said.
According to warrants, Efird is charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a student, three counts of sex offense with a student, and one count of crimes against nature.
Neighbor George Lee, a parent, said he was shocked to hear about the allegations.
"They're supposed to be a role model to the student," Lee said. "I know my kids, they look up to their teachers. You can't really depend on anything nowadays, as far as role models."
Lee told NewsChannel 12 the Efirds had always kept to themselves.
"When you have someone like that living beside you, you pay attention," Lee said. "Your guard is always up. But in [their] defense, I've never had any problem with them."
Duplin County Jail officials said Emily Efird was booked Tuesday and released on a $25,000 bond. According to the clerk of court, the suspect is expected to face a grand jury in December.
