(CNN) -- Universal background checks and a federal database of gun owners wouldn't stop gun violence, but they would serve agendas of people "bent on destroying the Second Amendment," Wayne LaPierre, National Rifle Association executive vice president, told the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday. "In the end there are only two reasons for government to create that federal registry of gun owners -- to tax them or to take them," he said.
