GREENVILLE - An attempted armed robbery is reported on the campus of East Carolina University.
According to officials, the incident was reported Wednesday. The freshman was approached by the suspect in the Wright Plaza area of campus. The suspect was described as a male in his early 20s wearing jeans and a grey shirt.
Officials say the suspect asked for money and told the female victim he had a gun.
The young woman then kicked the suspect and was able to get away unharmed.
The suspect then fled the area and was not apprehended.
ECU Sophomore Kathleen Daniels said this situation concerns her.
"I was really worried because I was here a little bit earlier than that and my roommate was here right at 9 o'clock so that was kinda scary," she said.
Demonte Alford, a junior at ECU, applauds the young woman for taking action.
"I think it was very brave in order to fight and get away," Alford said.
Lt. Chris Sutton wants to assure everyone on campus that this type of crime is rare. In fact, this is only the second attempted armed robbery incident reported on campus in 2012.
"We have not seen a peak or spike in these types of incidents so we're not going to push the panic button," Sutton said.
If you have any information on the suspect or incident you are asked to contact East Carolina University Police Department.
