JACKSONVILLE -

Family and Friends of the man who died in a motorcycle wreck in Onslow County held a memorial ceremony on the road where he took his last ride.

Devan Hemby, 23, died when his motorcycle left the roadway and hit a tree Saturday on Gardenview Drive. Monday, his family made a makeshift memorial at the site of the crash.

"He will be missed but we're not here today to memorialize his death," said Dan Hemby, Devan's uncle. "We're here to celebrate his life."

Dozens showed to honor the young man's life. Family members and friends said Hemby got the bike in March.

Witnesses say Hemby wasn't traveling over the speed limit, but something went wrong.

Adding to the family's trouble, Hemby didn't have life insurance. Hemby's mother, Jennifer, couldn't pay the $12,000 for a basic funeral for her son. She put a call for help on her Facebook page. She said a donor from California who wished to remain anonymous picked up the tab.

Hemby's funeral is now planned for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
