NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

A nursing home worker's alleged abuse of a resident has led to the worker being charged with felony patient abuse and neglect.

Lillian Fentress twisted 98-year-old Leolia Best's finger, leading to serious injury, according to New Bern Police.

"They had rushed my mother to the emergency [room]," said Best's daughter, Patricia Dixon.

Fentress, 65, was working at Unihealth Neuse, 1303 Health Dr., when she assaulted Best, according to police.

The administrator of Unihealth, which is also known as Two Rivers Healthcare, declined comment other than to say that Fentress no longer works at the facility.

Police arrested Fentress Saturday; the alleged incident happened in late September.

Fentress did not answer the door at her Trent Court home in New Bern.  Her listed phone number was disconnected.

A reporter was the first person to tell Best's son and nephew of the alleged abuse.

"That's definitely cruel," Best's nephew, Joseph Best, said.

Fentress is due in court Tuesday morning.
