BEAUFORT, CARTERET COUNTY - Police arrested a man accused of breaking into a Carteret County apartment and then running from officers -- all while he was naked.
The Beaufort Police Department said officers were sent to Sunshine Court at about 10 p.m. on Sept. 3 in reference to a naked man walking down the street.
While they were searching the area, a second 911 call came in about a breaking and entering at an apartment on Lennoxville Road.
The resident of the apartment told police that he was asleep when he heard a noise downstairs. The resident said he then got up and saw a silhouette of a man standing at the bottom of the stairs. The intruder then ran away and the resident said he called 911.
Officers said they found a naked man in the backyard of the apartment building. When they approached, the naked man ran away to a nearby area, where he was found hiding under a bush in a balled-up position, police said.
The naked man refused to cooperate, and officers had to physically subdue him before placing him under arrest, police added.
Police identified the suspect as 55-year-old Carl Francis Brownwell, who lives just two doors down from the apartment he allegedly broke into.
Brownwell is charged with indecent exposure, misdemeanor breaking and entering, and resisting, obstructing and delaying an officer. He was taken to the Carteret County Jail and given a $2,000 secure bond.
Police said the suspect is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 19.
