EMERALD ISLE, CARTERET COUNTY - Police said a man on vacation with his family drowned in the water at Emerald Isle, making him the third drowning victim in the town since June.
According to investigators, 65-year-old David Bruce Bowman, from Athens, Ohio, was swimming with his wife Friday near the 4600 block of the beach strand in Emerald Isle. When his wife went to sit on the beach, Bowman continued swimming.
But at about 12:49 p.m., witnesses reported seeing Bowman floating in the water just off shore, police said. The victim was pulled out by his wife and other bystanders, and CPR was performed. EMS workers then took Bowman to Carteret General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to investigators.
Police said they were not sure whether medical conditions played a role in the drowning. They said the investigation will not be completed until the medical examiner's report is released.
This is the third drowning in Emerald Isle within two month. On July 14, 39-year-old Andy Clegg, also from Ohio, went under the water near the 700 block of Ocean Drive while trying to save his young sons, police said. The man was unresponsive when he was pulled to shore and died the next day.
On June 13, Marcel Albu, 18, a foreign exchange student, was pulled from the water near the 8600 block of Ocean View Drive, according to investigators. He was pronounced dead at Carteret General hospital.
