Police investigate former gun store owner
Newport Police are investigating several complaints against the former owner of Ray's Gun Shop on Highway 70 in Newport.
The shop closed earlier this year. Police said around 20 people filed "loss of property" reports against the former owner, Ray Woods.
"Some [people] took guns in on consignment, some took guns in to be repaired and some of the victims paid for a weapon up front to be ordered and never received it," Jeff Clark, Newport Police Chief, said. Clark said close to 30 guns are unaccounted for.
Larry Langley said Woods sold four of his rifles and never gave him the money for them.
"He'd always say 'I'll cut you a check next week,'" Larry Langley, alleged victim, said. "There was always some excuse."
Clark said the police department is working with the ATF to investigate the reports against Woods. So far, no charges have been filed.
Officials with the ATF would no comment on the investigation.
Clark said any additional complaints against Woods should be directed to the Newport Police Department.
