N. TOPSAIL BEACH, ONSLOW COUNTY - Police have identified a surfer who drowned in the waters near North Topsail Beach in Onslow County.
The North Topsail Beach Police Department said 63-year-old Michael Moore, of Sneads Ferry, was the man who died. According to neighbors, Moore was a retired Camp Lejeune Marine.
Police said they got a call at about 3:27 p.m. Wednesday about a drowning near a beach strand in the area of Stump Sound off Highway 210. When first responders arrived at the scene, they tried to revive Moore for some time before declaring that he was dead.
According to investigators, Moore had been surfing alone. A friend pulled Moore, who was unresponsive, from the surf and called 911.
An autopsy performed Thursday morning revealed that a heart-related medical problem likely resulted in the victim's drowning, police said.
NewsChannel 12 spoke briefly with Moore's family, who said they are in mourning. Friends and neighbors said Moore leaves behind many family members, including his wife and adult children.
"It really hasn't hit yet,"said Neighbor Fred Lagoy. "He's gonna be really missed and I'm going to pray for their family. He was a very nice guy, and a very outgoing guy who was always willing to help."
