NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

A car smashed into a convenience store Wednesday night, knocking out the front door and windows and leaving behind a big mess.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. at the Super Stop on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, near Chattawka Lane, in New Bern.

Police say Tal Kap of New Bern was parked beside the building.  When he went to leave the parking lot, Kap backed his car in a semi circle, backing into the building's door and windows.  His car continued backing into store, with the car's trunk going up to the store counter.

Police say Kap, who they estimate to be about 35-years-old, looked as if he was starting to leave, so customers chased after him and stopped him.  They took his car keys from him and called police.

Kap had his three-year-old son with him, according to police.

Kap is charged with DWI, no operator's license, child endangerment and unsafe movement of a vehicle.

No one was injured and the store was closed for at least Wednesday night.
