JACKSONVILLE - Police in Jacksonville said a gun misfired during an attempted murder Friday night at a church on Bell Fork Road.
Investigators said 60-year-old John Mainor walked into Washington Chapel Church, confronted a man and tried to shoot him.
But, for whatever reason, the gun did not go off.
Police arrested Mainor, of Jacksonville, later that night. Mainor's charges include attempted first-degree murder, communicating threats, assault by pointing a gun, and simple assault.
A friend of Mainor's, who wished to stay anonymous, says Mainor went to the church Friday night to defend the honor of his 89 year-old mother, Tempye Mainor.
"He's my son, I love him," said Ms. Mainor.
Prior to the incident, Mainor got a call that a meeting at his mom's church had turned ugly. Friends say the alleged victim argued with Mainor's mom, and told her to "shut up."
That's when Mainor went to the church, according to friends.
"Well you never can tell how much a person cares about you, but when I heard that he had got this call then I knew he thought someone was trying to take advantage of me," said Ms. Mainor.
Mainor's mom believes the whole incident could have been avoided.
"I can stand on my own two feet, I didn't need him, but I guess he didn't know that," she said.
Mainor had his first appearance in Onslow County District Court on Monday. He is currently being held under a $100,000 bond.
