JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY -

A bicyclist hit by a car in Jacksonville has been upgraded to serious condition, a hospital official said.

According to the Jacksonville Police Department, the accident happened at about 6 a.m. Monday on Bell Fork Road.

The bicyclist, who friends on Facebook have identified as Chad Martin, was traveling west on Bell Fork Road across the southbound travel lanes, police said.  Meanwhile, a Nissan Altima was traveling south on Bell fork Road on the inside travel lane, according to investigators.

Police said the bicyclist failed to yield the right of way and was hit by the Altima, causing the bicyclist to be ejected upon the car.

The car's driver stopped, checked on the victim, and called 911, investigators said. The bicyclist was then taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition, said police.

Martin was later transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he was in serious condition as of Tuesday afternoon, a hospital official told NewsChannel 12.

Speed and alcohol were not factors, investigators said. At last check, no charges had been filed.
