Police: Arrests made in two Surf City hit-and-runs

Pedestrian hit by a car and the person responsible still on the run

SURF CITY, PENDER COUNTY - Police said they arrested two people for two separate hit-and-runs in Surf City, one of which caused serious injuries to a victim.

Michael Ramos, 24, of Dunn, was charged on Saturday with felony hit-and-run for allegedly hitting Lonnie Hendrick, 48, of Cary. The incident happened at about 9 p.m. Friday on North New River Drive in Surf City, near the intersection of Fourth Street, police said. Hendrick was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital with severe injuries, according to investigators.

Ramos was jailed under a $7,000 bond.

Surf City Police also charged 18-year-old Skylar Wellington with DWI and felony injury by motor vehicle, for allegedly hitting 60-year-old George Olson on the 9000 block of 9th Street. Olson did not have life-threatening injuries, police said. The incident happened nine hours after the first alleged hit-and-run.

Wellington was being held on a $12,000 bond.

Billie Bean said her family was sitting on the porch right in front of where police said Amos hit Hendrick in the first hit-and-run. According to Bean, when she saw Hendrick lying on the ground, she ran across the street and knelt by the victim's side.

"I just held his hand and told him to stay with us and keep breathing. 'You're going to be fine. Help's coming,'" said Bean.

Bean said another person was walking beside Hendrick, but he wasn't hurt. Bean told NewsChannel 12 she stayed with Hendrick until police arrived.

"I'd say, 'Squeeze my hand if you can hear me,' and at that point, he just crunched my hand and squeezed real tight," said Bean.

Bean's son, Bailey Bean, said the crash sounded like a beer bottle being thrown at the windshield of a car.

"Just sheer terror. It was just incredible that someone could hit somebody that hard and just drive away," said Bailey Bean.

He said the car stopped for just a moment after the accident, then sped away quickly towards North Topsail Beach.
