GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY - Greenville Police have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in a gunfight near East Carolina University just hours into New Year's Day.
Eddie Ray Battle has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, according to investigators.
Battle was allegedly involved in a gunfight at 2 a.m. Wednesday at the corner of Evans and 4th Streets, northwest of the ECU campus. It appeared that two groups of people were exchanging shots, police said.
According to the Greenville Police Department, detectives are confident that more arrests will be made.
No one was hurt, police said. But a window at Bradshaw's, a women's clothing store, was shot. In addition, at least one nearby vehicle had bullet holes as a result of the gunfire, investigators added.
James Speight's grandfather owns Bradshaw's. He said he's not surprised this happened.
"Just the cost of doing business," he said.
Speight said damage like this doesn't happen often. In fact the last incident happened nearly a decade ago when he said a drunk man busted through the glass.
Speight's family has been in business in the Uptown Greenville area since the 1950's.
And like the last time the glass was busted, he said the family will move forward.
"Board it up and contact my aunt and we'll get it straight you know," Speight said.
Police said surveillance cameras captured video of the gunfight and detectives are investigating. There is no word on a motive.
