KINSTON, LENOIR COUNTY - Police said they have arrested a man accused of shooting and injuring a 7-year-old at an apartment complex in Kinston.
The Kinston Department of Public Safety said 23-year-old Simeon Deon Meadows turned himself in to police at about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and malicious assault in secret.
Meadows, of North Independence Street in Kinston, is being held in the Lenoir County Jail under a $150,000 bond.
According to police, Meadows drove to Richard Green Apartments --on the 300 block of Richard Green Court-- and fired at least one bullet into a crowd of people. It happened at about 6:10 p.m. on June 20.
Tykel Moore, 7, was playing outside with several other kids when a bullet grazed his leg. The boy was not seriously hurt.
We spoke to Tykel's mother, Tamika Moore, who says she is thankful her son will make a full recovery.
"I'm glad he's okay because it could've been worse. But I'm glad that it wasn't," said Tamika. "I panicked. I really did--like any mother would do-- they would panic because it's their child."
Tamika says the news of this arrest brings some closure to the situation, but fears it's just a matter of time before something else happens in her community.
"I'm ready to move out of here," Tamika said. "There's always something happening."
Police do not believe the boy was the intended target.
In addition to the latest charges, Meadows is also awaiting trial for drug charges.
