WELDON, HALIFAX COUNTY - Police say the fatal shooting of a North Carolina 2-year-old girl last week was retaliation for an earlier shooting a mile away and 12 hours earlier.
Police Chief Mark Macon said Friday the shooting that killed the toddler and wounded her grandmother as they slept was an effort to get revenge for the fatal shooting the previous day of 15-year-old Keyuon Garner. Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp says the teenager was walking with others when several people stepped out of woods and began shooting.
Police charged four men Thursday with murder for the death of 2-year-old Dyana Anderson and attempted murder of 54-year-old Catherine Price. The toddler's 18-year-old uncle is a suspect in Garner's shooting death.
Police announced Friday morning that they have arrested four suspects in a shooting that killed a 2-year-old girl in Halifax County. A 15-year-old was also shot and killed that night, and investigators said they believe the shootings are related.
According to ABC affiliate WTVD, the Weldon Police Department announced the arrests of 19-year-old Jamonte Lamoncion Moody, of Roanoke Rapids, 17-year-old Semajs Short, of Roanoke Rapids, 21-year-old William David Cook, of Roanoke Rapids, and 21-year-old Victor Mallory, of Weldon.
All four suspects are charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. They are being jailed under no bond, WTVD reports.
The four suspects are accused of being involved in a shooting on Aug. 5 on the 600 block of Cedar Street in Weldon. Police said they responded at about midnight.
Police said the suspects fired shots into a home, killing 2-year-old Dyana Anderson. The toddler's 54-year-old grandmother, Katherine Price, was critically injured.
The 2-year-old's grandfather told WTVD they were sleeping when the shooting happened.
A few hours before the shooting that killed 2-year-old Dyana, another shooting less than a mile away killed a teen boy.
Police said 15-year-old Keyuon T. Garner was shot while walking with a group near 11th and Maple Streets, just outside Weldon, at about 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 5.
Garner was killed in the shooting, while 20-year-old Calvin Robinson was shot in the back and 17-year-old Wilson Green was shot in the leg, police said.
The Halifax County Sheriff's Office have made an arrest in the shooting. Samaj-Tojuan Clanton is charged with murder, deputies said. But the Sheriff's Office said investigators are still looking for 18-year-old Teddy Keith Anderson Jr, who is wanted on murder and attempted murder charges.
Anyone with information on Anderson's whereabouts is asked to contact the Halifax County Sheriff's Office at 252-583-8201, Halifax County Crime Stoppers at 252-583-4444, or the Weldon Police Department at 252-536-3136.
Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said the two shootings are believed to be related.
