The Pitt County Sheriff's Office began its online gun permit program so it could reduce the wait time and streamline the process.
After the Sandy Hook School shooting in December 2012, PCSO said their numbers tripled for gun permit applications. They had change their processing time from 2-4 days to 2 weeks.
PCSO Spokesperson Christy Wallace said the front administrative staff was overwhelmed with applications. However, the change to the online program, which began in July, has helped get them back to the 2-4 day wait period.
"So, now at least people are able to get to their other work and other jobs that they have other than serving the public with gun permits and concealed carry permits," she said.
The application fee is $5.00. If you apply online there is an additional $3.00 charge.
