The Pitt County Deputies will now carry Naloxone in their vehicles at all times. Deputies usually are the first responders to an emergency situation, and if they encounter an opiate overdose, an antidote will now be administered quicker.
Naloxone, better known as Narcan, is an opioid receptor blocker that results in a temporary reversal of the overdose. When administered quickly, it allows more time for advance medical treatment for the overdosed patient.
The recent rise in Pill abuse and addiction as well as, the increased use of heroin in the area has led to this initiative. Prescription pill abuse can include Codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, OxyContin, Percocet.
North Carolina has seen a 300% rise in unintentional poisoning deaths since 1999. The misuse or abuse of these drugs has seen the rise reach 1,104 deaths total in a thirteen year span.
