Pastor's murder suspects held on $2M bond

GREENVILLE - Two men accused of killing a retired pastor during a botched home invasion faced a judge Monday in Pitt County and were held behind bars on hefty bonds.

Police arrested 20-year-old Tyrell Artis and 22-year-old Shamel Brown on Saturday in connection with the death of 60-year-old James Carr, a retired pastor living in Greenville. After Monday's court appearance, Brown and Artis were each held in the Pitt County Detention Center on bonds of $2 million.

The two men are accused of an Aug. 20 break-in at Carr's home that turned deadly. Police said the suspected motive is robbery. Both suspects are charged with one count each of murder, and one count each of first-degree burglary.

Both men have had prior arrests on their records. Brown was already in jail Saturday for unrelated charges. After Artis was arrested, police said he is believed to be the gunman.
