The Pamlico County sheriff's son has been charged for allegedly stealing gasoline from the county.
Pamlico County Sheriff Billy Sawyer Jr. said his 18-year-old son, Billy Sawyer III, allegedly used his father's gas key at the county pump last week to get three gallons of gas.
Sheriff Sawyer said his son only put enough in the tank to make it to a gas station.
Sawyer III has been charged with misdemeanor larceny. He offered to pay back the county ten times the amount stolen, Sheriff Sawyer said. The 18-year-old is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
Sheriff Sawyer said he had seen several county employees filling up their personal cars at the county pump, and none of them were charged.
