Two Republican candidates for Onslow County sheriff took to the table in a public forum at Jacksonville City Hall Wednesday evening.
Standing room only audience members in the city council chamber submitted questions to current Sheriff Ed Brown and challenger Hans Miller.
The candidates offered differing ideas on how to address the problem of illegal drugs.
"In order to do that, we need to work together as law enforcement agencies and one of my visions is to explore the possibility of a county wide drug task force, where we work in concert with other law enforcement agencies," said Miller.
Brown said "the laws must be stronger for those who sell drugs and I'm talking about strong, long enough prison terms that it would discourage the sale and also get rid of them."
Brown was first elected sheriff in 1990.
Miller is a former state SBI agent and former security chief at Albert J. Ellis Airport.
The pair square off in the Republican primary in May.
