JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County - Several schools in Onslow County hosted Veterans Day ceremonies Thursday.
Meadow View Elementary School hosted its third annual flag raising ceremony. About 200 parents attended. It featured parents that are in the military whose students go to the school.
Brian MacDonald participated in the ceremony. He's in the Coast Guard and has two children at the school.
"It's really the first school that I've come across that makes such a big event about Veterans Day celebration," MacDonald said.
Northside High School also hosted a flag ceremony. Students sell flags to members of the community. Each one is purchase in honor of a veteran. Those flags are placed on the front lawn of the school.
The money that is raised is donated to the USO. This year the students raised $850. Students said they ceremony is special to them because a lot of their classmates have parents in the military.
"It makes me think that if I don't say, 'Thank you' in my own way, it makes me think they don't know I'm saying, 'Thank you,'" Northside student Brian Garrett said.
