NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

On Monday night, 67 Cherry Point Marines and one Navy Corpsman returned home from a seven month deployment in Afghanistan.

Family members and loved ones gathered at the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point,  waiting for the Marines to come home.

Melissa Bean anxiously awaited the arrival of her husband with her daughter's Abigail and Emma.

"I’m excited but kind of impatient because we've been waiting for a while. It's a little surreal," said Bean.

She said her husband has been deployed five times and it never gets easy.

Finally when the Marines emerge from behind the closed doors, family members and loved ones ran into their arms for one long embrace.

Sergeant Malika Sherman got to hold his five –month-old son for the first time.

"I’m feeling great. The first time meeting my boy and I’m so happy," said Sherman.

The Cherry Point Marines are part of the Attack Squadron 231. It is the oldest squadron in the Marine Corps.
