Investigators have released the name of a woman found dead after a mobile home fire in Wayne County Monday morning. Her 12-year-old son was able to escape the blaze.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Sharon Kascsak was found dead in the home at 133 Bass Lake Dr., about 4 miles northeast of Mr. Olive.
The Sheriff's Office said they received several calls at about 6:57 a.m. Monday about the mobile home being on fire and that a person may be trapped inside.
Before the arrival of firefighters, a neighbor tried to enter the home, but could not due to the intensity of the flames and the large amount of smoke, said investigators.
When fire crews arrived, they saw that the fire covered a large area of the home. They tried to enter, but the conditions prevented them, the Sheriff's Office said.
Once firefighters were able to get inside the residence, the found Kascsak dead, lying on the floor of the master bedroom, said investigators.
A 12-year-old boy, who neighbor Marc Anderson said is Kascsak's son, was also in the home at the time of the fire.
The boy woke up to the smell of smoke in his bedroom, the Sheriff's Office said. Once he opened his bedroom door, he saw the large fire. The 12-year-old then broke his bedroom window and jumped out, said investigators. Once outside, the boy ran to a neighbor's house for help.
Investigators said the boy suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns to his body. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The Sheriff's Office said investigators were able to determine the area where the fire started, but could not find the source of the ignition. As a result, the cause of the fire is undetermined. The Sheriff's Office did say that no criminal act occurred.
