Official: Man who assaulted mother sentenced for armed robbery
A Carteret County man pleaded guilty Thursday to an armed robbery that began after he assaulted his mother and stole her gun, an official said.
According to District Attorney Scott Thomas, 47-year-old Gregory Duane Anderson, of Newport, was ordered to spend between four years and 10 months to six years and seven months in prison. The sentencing took place Thursday at the Carteret County Courthouse in Beaufort.
Prosecutors said Anderson pushed his mother down a flight of stairs on Sept. 20, 2011 because she had refused to give him prescribed medication. Anderson then stole his mother's medicine and her pistol, before heading to Jones County, investigators said.
On his way to Jones County, Anderson stopped by the town of Stella and stole a beer and glass tube from Pap's Grill, according to prosecutors. When a clerk tried to stop him, Anderson pulled his pistol on her and drove away.
Once Anderson crossed into Jones County, officers began chasing after him, investigators said. The pursuit ended when Anderson crashed into a deputy's cruiser on Catfish Lake Road.
Before pleading guilty Thursday to one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon, Anderson was already convicted in Jones County of fleeing to elude arrest and possession of a stolen firearm. He was sentenced to between 22 to 27 months in prison for the Jone County charges.
