One man was killed in a shootout with Carteret County deputies Friday evening, investigators told NewsChannel 12.
The shooting happened at an apartment complex on the 3100 block of Highway 24 in the Broad Creek area.
When deputies arrived on scene, he then barricaded himself in one of the apartments, Sheriff Asa Buck said. After a negotiation team tried to contact the suspect, Buck says the suspect allegedly came back out of his apartment fired shots at deputies with a handgun. Deputies then returned fire. The suspect was killed in the shootout, deputies said.
Deputies are withholding the name of the suspect until next of kin is notified. The State Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case, since law enforcement was involved in the incident. NewsChannel 12 is working to get more details.
