New Years Babies Born In The East

EASTERN CAROLINA - Eastern Carolina families are ringing in the new year with little bundles of joy!

NewsChannel 12 called around to all the hospitals in our viewing area to check in on the New Year's babies.

Charles Nicholas Coleman was the first baby born around 12:21 a.m. at the Naval Hopsital in Camp Lejeune.

"Charlie" as he is known by his family weighed 8 pounds 15 ounces and was 21 inches long.

His parents, Sgt. Cody and Casey Coleman said they weren't exactly prepared.

"I was actually due Jan. 9 and we came in yesterday just to appease me because [my husband] really didn't think I was in labor and after we went to triage they said 'yeah you're definitely in labor.' So this was a shock. We didn't have any bags packed or anything," Casey said.

The pair met at a mutual friend's wedding four years ago but they are both from the same area in Tennessee.

Casey said as soon as she found out she was in labor she called their families. The excited grandparents arrived just an hour before Charlie was born.

Big brother Russell was also at the hospital for the big event.

Officials told me the Naval Hospital opened in 1943. In order to have a baby born at the hospital one of the parents must either be an active or reserve member of the military.

Casey said she can't wait to celebrate next year.

"This will be fun to do his birthday. It's still kinda close to Christmas but there's a week so we can try and make his birthday special," Casey said.

The family expects to return to their home in Swansboro Monday morning.

A set of twins came next at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. Two boys were born at 3:36 a.m. and 3:40 a.m.

Carolina East in New Bern also had a baby born in the New Year. The Stevens family, from Havelock, now has 3 children, with the arrival of baby Tanner.

Tanner was born at 6:21 a.m.

His parents are Sgt. Scotty and Christina Stevens. He has a brother named Zane and a sister named Cherish.

As of 7 p.m. Sunday evening, Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston has not had a baby born.

Pitt Memorial Hospital was unable to tell NewsChannel 12 if a baby had been born.

Congratulations to all the families!
