NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY - Timothy Downs was selected from more than 45 candidates nationwide to be the new economic development director for Craven County
Downs is a lawyer from Ohio who previously served as deputy director for the City of Dayton Economic Development Office. According to Downs, he worked there for more than four years, managing a staff of 10 employees and a $1.5 million annual operating budget. There, he oversaw a $3 million annual development fund.
Downs told NewsChannel 12 he also has experience working in a city with military presence because Dayton, Ohio is close to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
His responsibilities here in Craven County include implementing economic development initiatives on a county-wide basis. Downs will also be in charge of recruiting new businesses, working to expand existing businesses, and developing a strong economic development program.
Downs has a B.S. in zoology from North Carolina State University and a J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He is a registered patent attorney licensed to practice in the state of Ohio.
Downs is a certified development finance professional by the National Development Council and is working on a Certified Economic Developer designation from the International Economic Development Council.
His annual salary as Craven County's new director of economic development is $93,061.
