New Bern RCS adds another day to food giveaway
Religious Community Services in New Bern will extend its food distribution to Friday, due to low turnout Thursday from a glitch in the notification system.
Minister Roseanne Brownell said the Craven County Department of Social Services did not send out reminder letters to people who qualified for the food giveaway.
"That’s how the people with food stamps get their letters. It’s through the DSS. DSS punches it in and the state is supposed to send it out," Brownell said.
RCS had almost 10,000 food items to hand out to needy families Thursday. But because the letters were not sent out, the RCS will be handing out food items again on Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Brownell told NewsChannel 12
Meanwhile, Craven County DSS officials said they are contacting as many people with food stamps as they can. They are also planning to help staff Friday's event.
Food recipient Clementine Jones was the first in line for Thursday's distribution. She came to the RCS at about 2:45 a.m.
"I woke up really early [Thursday] morning and I couldn't sleep. So I decided to get dressed and come on out here, so I could get my blessings for [Thursday]," Jones said.
People like Cadence Body who came to the pantry said they are very grateful.
"Oh, I love it. It works out for everybody," Body said.
According to Brownell, RCS ran out of food during each of its last three food distributions this year.
“Three months ago, cars wrapped around the cemetery and then, the line was almost to the corner," Brownell said.
