A man attending a memorial gathering at the Colonial Mobile Home Park in New Bern is recovering at the hospital after getting shot during the event.
Sharod B. Murrell was listed in critical condition Monday night at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. New Bern Police are investigating what led up to the shooting.
It all started Saturday night when family, friends and community members gathered to celebrate the life of a Isaiah Miles who died in a car crash in 2013.
During the event, an argument took place. Witnesses don't recall how many people were involved in that argument.
Shortly after the conflict, gun shots rang out into the crowd. In the crowd were children and adults.
Witnesses say there was one male shooter.
New Bern Police reported Murrell as the only person injured.
Neighbor Jenna Cooper lives across the street from where the party was happening. Cooper was invited to the celebration, but was inside her home when the gun shots were fired. Also inside with Cooper was her husband and 1-year-old son.
"I was just scared. I was scared because the bullets will go through my trailer no matter what, you know?" Cooper said. "I have my baby and all I've ever wanted my whole life was my baby. So I grabbed my baby and ran in the closet."
