NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

After seeing on NewsChannel 12 that their neighbor needed help, residents on Casey Road in New Bern joined together to build a ramp. Now, Jack Bennett, an Air Force veteran, should once again be able to live in his own home instead of his truck, where he had been living for two months.

The new ramp is built with a gentle incline, which should allow Bennett to roll up to his front door without any problems. Bennett suffers from a severe hip condition, which makes it difficult to climb stairs.

All the lumber was donated by Guy C. Lee, all the work to build the ramp was done by Bennett's neighbors.

Neighbor James Mead says it was just the right thing to do. He says Bennett isn't the type of person that likes surprises, but seemed open to the idea of a ramp.

Before being limited to his truck, Bennett spent his free time cleaning the Croatan National Forest as a volunteer. His neighbors say they are glad they can help someone who spends so much time helping others.
