Public school teachers are going to court to fight a new North Carolina law that eliminates job protections in favor of employment contracts.
The North Carolina Association of Educators filed a lawsuit Tuesday saying the law passed by the General Assembly this summer takes away existing teacher tenure rights. The law starts a five-year process after which teachers will work under contracts.
The state's top two lawmakers said they remain focused on children succeeding in class.
North Carolina law for more than 40 years has said veteran teachers cannot be fired or demoted except for a series of listed reasons that include poor performance, immorality, and insubordination.
Career teachers also have the right to a hearing where they can challenge the reasons offered for their firing or demotion.
