NC tax overhaul bills slated for committee talk
House and Senate Republicans want to talk more publicly about efforts to overhaul North Carolina's tax system.
The finance committees in both chambers scheduled discussions Thursday about tax bills which have been filed this year. GOP leaders have pledged to pass some kind of tax reform. Gov. Pat McCrory wants North Carolina's income tax rates to decrease to levels of surrounding states.
House and Senate Republicans have offered tax proposals that would lower sales and income tax rates while expanding the number of services subject to the sales tax. The Senate plan would make North Carolina's sales tax base among the broadest in the nation.
Democrats and liberal-leaning advocates say the competing plans would give tax cuts to the high-wage earners at the expense of the poor.
