NC high-tech driver's license project moving ahead

A dispute between North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles and a company picked to create high-tech driver's licenses for the state appears resolved for now.
The chief information officer for the Department of Transportation said Thursday the Next Generation Secure License program is moving ahead with a pilot project by the end of 2014 and broader production in 2015. CIO David Ulmer says details are being worked out.
DMV has been unhappy with work done by MorphoTrak, which was supposed to complete the project in late 2011. DMV told the company twice to stop work and sent a contract termination letter in September.
The licenses are supposed to include laser-embossed 3-D driver images and other measures to meet federal standards.
North Carolina has spent more than $5 million so far.
