(CNN) -- The 2012 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly Monday to Sir John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka for the "discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent" -- the ability to differentiate into specialized cells.
