A child care worker is accused of abusing a one-year-old girl in Carteret County.
Morehead City Police said it happened at Childcare Network in Morehead City on May 1st. They said the woman responsible for hurting the one-year-old girl is 29-year-old Elizabeth Cochran.
Mother Saless Hewitt said after she went to pick up her daughter at the at day care center. She said she saw marks on her arms and knew something wasn't right.
"My first reaction to the marks was oh my God what happened, something just did not sit with me,” Hewitt explained. “So right then I called the director and told her I’ll be there as soon as I get off work. I need to see the video. I need to know what happened to my child.”
Hewitt said when she confronted Cochran she told her the marks were probably from sand fleas from playing out on the playground. But after watching surveillance video she knew there was much more to the story.
"Ms. Elizabeth snatched her, held her by her right arm and that's when I knew where those marks came from," Hewitt said.
Police said hard enough to leave nail marks on her arm. Hewitt said that's when she immediately went to the Morehead City Police Department to file the report.
"It hurts me more than anything, not only that it was my child or any child I’d be hurt. But that's my child, my one-year-old baby, that can't come home and tell me about her day, that can't come home and tell me what happened,” Hewitt explained.
She said her daughter has been going to Childcare Network for nine months and never thought something like this would happen.
"I don't fault anybody other than the teacher that did this to her. At the end of the day all I want is for her to be behind bars and justice for my daughter,” Hewitt said.
NewsChannel 12 also reached out to the director of the Childcare Network to learn more.
The director said they apologize for what has happened, but said these are the actions of an employee and don't represent the company as a whole. The director also said they let Cochran go as soon as they were aware of the incident.
