MOREHEAD CITY, CARTERET COUNTY - The Morehead City Police Department has identified one of its officers who passed away over the weekend.
Officer Christina Della Cava, 27, died Sunday from an illness, according to MHC Police. She was under medical care in Chapel Hill. The exact nature of her illness was not released.
The Morehead City Police Department released the following statement on Facebook:
"It is with the heaviest of hearts that this post is being made by Morehead City Police Department. We lost a vivacious, promising young officer [Sunday]. She was our co-worker, our family member, and our friend. Christina Della Cava, we hope you are in peace and know how much you will be missed.
"Please help us remember her life and how she touched us all in so many beautiful ways. Keep her family and friends in your thoughts."
MHC Police said they will post information on services and arrangements in the future.
Cava was born in Cold Springs, N.Y., and grew up in Florida, according to her biography on the website of Communities in Schools in Carteret County. She is survived by her Marine husband and their daughter.
A Morehead City police officer has died.
Morehead City Police Chief Wrenn Johnson says the officer died of natural causes on Sunday. Chief Johnson says she is not yet releasing the officer's name because the officer has family out off the area who have yet to be notified.
Chief Johnson says they intend to make a statement about the officer death on their Facebook page Monday.
