Moral Monday protests head to Georgia

ATLANTA - Hundreds gathered at the Georgia Capitol building to push Gov. Nathan Deal to expand the state's Medicaid program as state lawmakers met for the first day of the legislative session.

Local news outlets report the NAACP and other groups held a "Moral Monday" rally, which is a replicated version of rallies that began in North Carolina. The demonstrations are meant to counter public policies that some consider extreme and detrimental.

North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber told demonstrators not to "make a deal with injustice."

Expanding the state's Medicaid program would extend health coverage to about 650,000 low-income Georgians. Deal has said the program is already too expensive and the state can't afford to expand it.
