An update to a story we first told you about a month ago after a viewer alerted NewsChannel 12 to a mold problem inside a New Bern apartment.
Now that tenant, Amanda Darnell, has something to celebrate. She’s set to receive a new home from Habitat for Humanity in New Bern.
Habitat for Humanity told NewsChannel 12 two days after they selected Darnell for a new home, they saw our story and said it reassured them she was the right one for the home.
"It’s a miracle in the making. It’s like going from the pit to the palace,” said Darnell.
Ed Ryder is the Office Manager for Habitat for Humanity. He said they had six other applicants to choose from but after interviewing Darnell they knew she was a perfect candidate.
"We’re very happy to be able to do this for her. This gives her that opportunity to start the family process in a home for those two children," said Ryder.
He said the home should be complete by mid-September, early October.
Darnell said she applied for the home in January and couldn't believe how fast everything came together. She said she is just ready to move into her three bedrooms, three bathroom home, with her little girls.
"Just the freedom of it's yours, you don't have to worry about anyone putting you out, it's safe and it’s clean," said Darnell.
This Saturday, Keller Williams Realty is sponsoring a golf tournament for Habitat for Humanity, where Darnell and her family will be the guests of honor.
