Model riding shotgun during Bieber's arrest has ties to ENC

JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY - As Justin Bieber continues to deal with allegations that he was driving drunk while street racing in Florida, records show the woman who was riding shotgun had her own trouble with the law in Eastern Carolina.

Chantel Taleen Jeffries, a 21-year-old model who had attended White Oak High School in Jacksonville, N.C., was riding shotgun in Bieber's Lamborghini when he was pulled over in Miami Beach early Thursday morning. Police said they saw the 19-year-old pop star street racing and pulled him over just after 4 a.m.

"There are pictures of her in his Lamborghini...and that's when I was just like, that is absolutely insane," said Jake Ronza, an old neighbor and classmate of Jeffries, and also a college friend of NewsChannel 12 reporter Alison Parker. "I was never expecting it to amount to her being in such a scandalous story in a way, in a high-profile arrest of one of the biggest names in the entire world."

Bieber failed a sobriety test and was booked into jail, said Miami Beach Police. He was charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest, and driving without a valid license. Bieber was released on a $2,500 bond.

His passenger, Jeffries, had also been in trouble with the law. Jeffries was arrested by the Onslow County Sheriff's Office in February 2011 and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, according to warrants.

The warrants stated that Jeffries stabbed a woman with a "sharp object in the left forearm during a physical altercation." But the alleged victim did not want to go forward with the case. Jeffries' charge was later dropped on the condition that she pay her court fee of $130.

"Just seeing her mugshot, or the picture of her with Justin Bieber, we're like, okay, wow," said a former coworker of Jeffries, who wished to remain anonymous. "It was just a shocker. She was always a good friend of mine. We always used to talk here at work, laugh, joke around. She has a great personality. Fun person to be with, or hang out with, or work with."

Records show Jeffries was also convicted of speeding in Johnston and Sampson Counties. The incidents happened in December 2010 and April 2011 respectively.

"Now she's with the Bieber...crazy," Ronza said.

Bieber was pulled over Thursday morning after an officer saw the pop star driving a yellow Lamborghini in a race against a red Ferrari in a residential area, said Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez. The cars were speeding at about 55 to 60 mph in a 30 mph zone, said investigators.

The officer pulled Bieber's Lamborghini over, but the singer was "was not cooperating with the officer's instructions," Martinez said.

"At first, he was a little belligerent, using some choice words questioning why he was being stopped and why the officer was even questioning him," Martinez explained.

According to a police report, Bieber allegedly ignored a police officer's request to keep his hands on the car while the officer did "a cursory patdown for weapons."

"I ain't got no f***ing weapons," the arresting officer quoted Bieber as saying. "Why do you have to search me? What the f*** is this about?"

The arrest report described Bieber as having a "flushed face, bloodshot eyes, and the odor of alcohol on his breath."

Bieber failed a field sobriety test and was arrested, police said.

"[Bieber] made some statements that he had consumed some alcohol, and that he had been smoking marijuana and consumed some prescription medication," said Martinez.

The police report also stated that two black SUVs blocked the traffic, which "facilitated an open road" for the two cars to race on Pine Tree Drive.

Police have identified the Ferrari's driver as 19-year-old Def Jam recording artist Khalil Sharieff. He was also arrested on a drunken driving charge, investigators said.

Thursday's incident marked the first time Bieber was arrested. However, the pop star is under investigation for allegedly egging his California neighbor's home.
