A new state law will allow people with concealed carry permits to take their guns to certain public parks and greenways.

The new law, which goes into effect October 1, includes areas usually designated for biking and walking.

However, cities may continue to prohibit the carrying of a concealed handgun in recreational facilities, where designated athletic events are taking place. That includes athletic fields, gyms and pools.

According to state law, cities must post signs indicating where concealed guns are not allowed.

People in Greenville have mixed feelings about the new rules.

"I think as long as you have concealment it's okay. I mean the park hours are daylight hours so I'm not really concerned about it. Plus, the greenway is full of people so I feel usually safe," Skip Schurman said.

"It's already violent around here so I don't think we should have guns,” Jennifer Whitfield said.

"I'm in-between because I think people have a right to carry but then it also concerns me because there are psychos out there,” Nikki Tyler said.

Some of the people we talked with said it's not the parks out in the open they're worried about. It's the trails deep in the woods where police may or may not hear you if you get into trouble.

“It makes me more nervous because every time I walk by myself I have to look behind me or whatever to check and see who is behind me,” Whitfield said.

However, Tyler said she has her own plans for protection, especially when she's alone in the park with her 8-month-old son, Landon.

“Since they passed that law, I have a right to carry concealed if I want to also if I chose to which I've been thinking about doing,” Tyler said.

On Thursday September 12, Greenville city council updated its ordinance which previously prohibited the carrying of a concealed handgun in certain "recreational facilities.” Those facilities included greenways, biking trails and certain parks with playgrounds.
