GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY - ECU Police have recovered the Pee Dee the Pirate statue that was stolen from the campus mall over the weekend.
Someone spotted the statue near the Bradford Creek soccer fields and alerted investigators, said Lt. Chris Sutton of ECU Police.
Police recovered the statue early Monday. School officials said the statue only suffered minor damage.
"The Pirate was recovered, but is currently unavailable because he is being checked out," Lt. Sutton said. "At the appropriate time, he will be returned to his familiar place on campus."
Sutton said officers are still investigating who removed the statue from the campus mall. Police said the statue was determined missing at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

East Carolina University police are asking for help to find an iconic pirate statue that was stolen early this morning from the campus mall.
According to a the Twitter.com account of ECU Police, the statue was stolen from the area near Cotten Hall. It was discovered missing Sunday, 6:30 a.m.
"The vandalism or theft of university property is not a victimless crime," said Gerald Lewis, ECU's police chief. "We will be reviewing security camera footage as part of our investigation to identify the person or persons involved in this incident. Once they are identified the appropriate charges and discipline will be meted out to those responsible."
The statue is iconic because people often take pictures with the statue around graduation time. The statue was stolen a week before before graduation weekend.
